Monterey Car Week remains one of the most concentrated gatherings of significant cars anywhere, and this year’s auctions offered plenty to study. Among the hundreds of consignments, three in particular earned our attention—not simply for their value, but for the depth of history and purpose they represent.
The 1973 Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Daytona Competizione (Series III) presented by Gooding & Company is one of just fifteen factory-built competition Daytonas and one of only five Series III examples. Chassis 16407 was campaigned by the North American Racing Team at Le Mans in 1973 and later achieved a class win and second overall at the 1979 24 Hours of Daytona. Its restoration retains the character of a car built for endurance racing, making it a highlight of the sale with an estimate of $8–10 million.
At Broad Arrow’s Jet Center auction, the Porsche 911 ST “Safari” offered a different but equally compelling form of motorsport heritage. Built for the East African Safari Rally, it is one of only a handful of factory-prepared STs for that notoriously demanding event. Its raised suspension, period-correct livery, and functional rally equipment speak to a machine designed for durability and speed over thousands of unforgiving kilometers.
The 1961 Ferrari 250 GT SWB California Spider Competizione at Gooding & Christie’s represents the rarest end of the market. One of only two alloy-bodied, full-competition SWB California Spiders, chassis 2383 GT combines the elegance of Scaglietti’s design with genuine competition specification. Not offered publicly in decades, it is expected to exceed $20 million and stands as one of the most significant Ferraris to appear at auction in recent years.
These three cars illustrate the breadth of Monterey’s appeal: purebred endurance racing pedigree, rally-hardened engineering, and the pinnacle of dual-purpose competition design. In a week defined by variety and spectacle, they stood out as machines whose significance is matched by their presence.
